The D'Arcy McNickle Library collection is organized by the Library of Congress Classification System .   Many academic libraries use this system.   Most public libraries and primary or secondary school libraries are organized by the Dewey Decimal System, so our classification system may be unfamiliar to you.

The Library of Congress Classification system separates knowledge into 21 classes and each class is identified by a letter, subclasses by combinations of letters and subtopics within classes and subclasses by a numerical notation.  

We have tools in the library such as signs, charts and, of course, librarians to help you find your way around and access the items you need.   When you are in the library, do not hesitate to ask for help in accessing material, as we are aware that you may not be familiar with our classification system.
